The State Fair of Virginia comes to Meadow Event Park September 27 – October 6. Find the schedule of daily events here. Parking is free. Some of the discounts require advance purchase, so plan accordingly!
If you’re going on a weekday – No benefit to advance purchase, except avoiding potential tickets at the fair. Tickets are $12 at the gate, youth tickets are $8, rides not included.
If you’re riding rides – The cheapest two days will be Tuesday, October 1 (unlimited ride wristband only $12) and Thursday, October 3 ($1 per ride, perfect if you only want to ride a few rides). So on Tuesday, you could get a general admission and unlimited rides for $24 total.
If you’re going multiple days – Purchase a season pass in advance for $25 (though hopefully you got it for $20 when it was available earlier)
If you are a family with two kids between the ages of 5 and 12 – Purchase a Family Fun Pack in advance (by 9/25) for $75 which includes 2 adult tickets, 2 youth tickets and 2 unlimited ride wristbands (saves $17 over weekend pricing, saves $7 on a weekday)
Special cases – Military personnel with a current military ID receive free admission Wednesday, Oct. 2; others in party pay normal prices. Farm Bureau members can pick up coupons good for $4 off adult admissions and $2 off youth admission valid 9/30 to 10/3 at Farm Bureau offices
It doesn’t look like any daily deal bargains on tickets this year.
The State Fair has a bus making stops around town and giving out tickets to the first 100 people – check Facebook to see where it goes!

Last year, we benefited from a number of half-off State Fair deals, including season passes and daily tickets through Groupon.
I’ve been monitoring the Fair’s Facebook page and haven’t seen any indication that there might be similar savings this year. BUT, it’s probably worth waiting to buy tickets until just before the Fair starts, just in case.
So far, here are the discount options I’ve found:
Tickets and wristbands at Martin’s and BB&T – available now at Central Virginia BB&T branches and Martin’s Food Markets locations: Get adult admission tickets for only $12 and one-day unlimited ride wristbands for only $18
$12 Tuesday – Come to the State Fair on Tuesday, Oct. 2, and get your Unlimited Ride Wristband for only $12 (normally $21) with the purchase of a regular weekday general admission ticket (thanks Julia!) (wording sounds like it can’t be combined with online $2 off admission code)
Family Fun Pack: – $68 ($14 savings during week, $24 savings on weekend) Available online until Oct. 5
Family Fun Packs include: 2 Adult Admission, 2 Youth Admission and 2 Ride Wristbands
Season Passes – Season passes are $25 online and $30 at the gate.
Homeschoolers – Homeschool Day is Monday, October 1. Homeschoolers can order tickets through HEAV by September 14. Tickets must be redeemed on Oct 1 between 10am and 1pm
Students (preschool-grade 12): $6 each
Adults (all other ages): $12 each (Note: cheaper to purchase with discount code mentioned above)
Ride Wrist Band – $17 each if purchased in advance. You may request one (1) complimentary chaperone ticket for every eight (8) student tickets ordered on ONE order form

*Tuesday 8/9/11 only, starting ~10am*
Facebook fans of the State Fair of Virginia can purchase a Walk Around Season Pass to this year’s Fair for just $11 (regularly $23 advance purchase, or $30 at the fair. A one-day pass is $13-$15!). Limit 6 per person, and limited quantities available.
This year’s State Fair will run from September 29 through October 9. The pass provides admission for all eleven days of the Fair (does not include rides)
This information is from the 2010 State Fair season.
The State Fair of Virginia is coming to the Meadow Event Park in Caroline, this September 23-October 3!
Fair pricing is a complex equation, affected by day of the week, time of day, age, whether you plan to ride the rides or not… Advance planning is your greatest ally in getting the most for your money at the fair!
Here are the base prices for a one day walk-around ticket, rides not included:
After 5 p.m. Monday – Friday……….$10
Any weekday Monday – Friday……….$13
Saturday or Sunday……………………$15
If you intend to visit the fair twice or more, spring for the Walk Around Season Pass, which is valid for entry all 11 days of the Fair’s run. Season passes do not include rides. And purchase it now, because the season pass is $23 in advance (through 5pm on 9/22).
Once the Fair is underway, the pass price increases to $30, but you can save $4 by picking up a coupon from a Union First Market Bank branch.
The above options are just for entry into the fair; rides are another wrinkle in the calculations. Entry to rides requires tickets or a wristband, purchased separately. And the number of tickets required for rides varies from two to six apiece.
If you just can’t get enough carnival rides, the ride wristband option is probably the most economical; it allows for unlimited rides on the day of your visit, and is available for purchase at the fair
Ride Wristband (age 7-59) …………………..$21
Ride Wristband (age 3-6; 60+)………………$17
Ride Wristband (age 2 and under) ………….FREE
(So admission plus wristband would cost a grand total of $36 on a weekend)
If you don’t expect to ride more than 10 rides, consider the $30 Keep-it-Simple Combo Option: an advance combination package which includes a voucher for one gate admission ticket (including facility fee) plus 40 ride tickets. Redeem the voucher at any ticket booth in the Ticket Plaza during the Fair. The voucher is available at participating FasMart and Kroger locations statewide and on the State Fair website prior to close of business on September 22nd.
Want your tickets a la carte?
Individual Tickets …………………$1 each
25 Ride Tickets……………………$20
60 Ride Tickets **SPECIAL after 9pm on Friday**…………………….$20
So Friday night owls get a good deal – $10 fair admission after 5pm and 60 ride tickets for only $20 after 9pm.
Also, between September 15 and October 3, McDonald’s locations in Tidewater, Richmond, Charlottesville and Northern Virginia will have coupons available for 30 Ride Tickets for only $20 (so you get 5 extra tickets over buying without the coupon). Redeem the coupon at Ride Ticket booths at the Fair.
Yet a few more possibilities:
Become a fan of the State Fair on Facebook and enter the almost-daily contests for free tickets.
Homeschoolers can attend Homeschool Day at the Fair on September 27, with $6 youth and $11 adult walk around tickets
Members of the military with ID and their immediate families are eligible for a $3 discount on walk around ticket pricing. See website for more details about eligibility and ID requirements
If you’re heading to the fair, also check out the printable coupons available for merchandise and food discounts (PDF) – lots of $1 off and 10% off offers.
