Braved the pre-Christmas Short Pump traffic to check out the newest RVA Goodwill this week
First, where is the Short Pump Goodwill located? At 4200 Tom Leonard Drive, right behind… Tom Leonard’s Farmers Market. (It really doesn’t require much traffic braving to reach because you just turn right at the first traffic light after the ramp from I-64.)
Drive to the back of the parking lot to reach the drive-through donation center. (The parking lot sidewalk doesn’t connect all the way to the drive through, so it might be best to drive through for your donations, if you have them, before parking to shop)
There are two big rooms, the “Home Store” to the right when you enter, with housewares, books, furniture, and electronics:
And the main clothes, shoes, and accessory space:
It’s very spacious, lots of room around the aisles. Pricing is consistent with other area Goodwills ($4.99 for a women’s long-sleeve shirt), and items are sorted by category then color. In the connecting hallway at the back I spotted four dressing rooms, which seems like low capacity for a store this size.
Half-price “color or the week” sales will begin January 18-
The second-hand options in the Far West End are expanding:
At 9 a.m. this Thursday 12/11, Goodwill of Central Virginia will open its new Short Pump store next to Tom Leonard’s.
(4200 Tom Leonard Drive)
NOTE: All classes are now filled – If your child will still be young enough next year, you can sign up on Apple’s website in April or May to be notified when registration opens; it seems to open on a Monday in mid-June
Reserve your child’s spot now in one of Apple’s free three-day workshops for kids ages 8-12 – go here to sign up (fills up quickly!)
Apple Store at Short Pump Town Center
Update 8:50 pm: That WAS fast! The six movie camps were all open when I posted at 5:25, and all filled three hours later. But the iBooks camps are still open – where it says Select A Workshop, click on “Interactive Storytelling with iBooks”
Good thrifty news for the far West End:
Goodwill has announced plans to open a new 22,000 square foot location at 4200 Tom Leonard Drive! – Richmond Biz Sense (Next door to Tom Leonard’s Farmers Market, currently home to a car customization shop). The Short Pump Goodwill is targeted for a fall opening.
Teachers & Staff, enjoy a FREE Chicken sandwich today through Friday [8/30] from 2-5pm! To redeem, show your school ID at the register, while supplies last (250 per day).
Short Pump Town Center has released the line-up of performers for its FREE Thursday evening summer concert series, beginning with Sister Hazel on June 20:
Concerts are from 6-8pm in the Main Plaza.
Every Tuesday in May from 6-8:30pm, there will be a free musical performance outdoors at Short Pump Town Center. The concerts will take place near Dick’s Sporting Goods, in earshot of many of the outdoor dining areas (Firebirds’, Bakers Crust, Lehja, California Pizza Kitchen, etc).
The new combined Babies ‘R Us/Toys ‘R Us store in Short Pump will have its grand opening this weekend:
The 58,000-square-foot store represents an ongoing strategy for the world’s leading dedicated toy and juvenile products retailer to bring two trusted brands together under one roof in an integrated Side-by-Side store format. Featuring a new design, the store provides customers a streamlined shopping environment that is easy to navigate and showcases the exclusive product offerings customers have come to expect. The store will celebrate its grand opening weekend with great savings, giveaways, kid-friendly activities and visits from popular costumed characters beginning on Friday, October 12 through Sunday, October 14.
I don’t have any additional specifics. The store is located in the same shopping center as Kroger, across from Short Pump Town Center.
Babies ‘R Us at 9004 West Broad St and Toys ‘R Us at 8700 Quioccasin Rd are liquidating inventory as they prepare for a move to a single Short Pump store.
Signs currently say up to 30% off, but most merchandise is 10% off (Not worth rushing out to get your Christmas shopping done). All items are final sale. The stores will tentatively be open until the end of September.

The new combined Toys R Us/Babies R Us will be located at “The Corner in Short Pump” across from Short Pump Town Center. It is scheduled to open October 12.
Not pleased about this – deep Short Pump is inconvenient to access, but I dare say they won’t miss my very occasional trips 🙂
