Those looking for cheap fun this weekend are in luck – there’s plenty to be had around the Richmond area, starting with some biggies Downtown

Friday
Manchester’s Fourth Friday (free) – Advertised as “providing art, music, food, and outdoor movie and fun – south of the river,” courtesy of local merchants, art galleries and cafes. Start at ArtWorks, which hosts new art shows, complete with refreshments and a chance to meet the artists from 7-10pm (320 Hull Street), and check out ArtSpace‘s Plant Zero exhibit.

Saturday
Shockoe Chef Showdown (free, $2 to taste) – shockoe shef showdown
This sounds like a must-see for all wannabe chefs of Richmond. From what I can gather, 11-1pm will feature tasting in 3 categories (Meat dish, veggie dish, dessert), with samples available for $2. Then starting at 1pm, there will be a Fresh Market Basket competition, Iron Chef style. Lots more details at Richmond.com
17th Street Farmer’s Market, 1-4

Duck Race 2008 (free) – duck race… And while you’re in the area, you can also check out the Big Brothers/Big Sisters Duck Race happening at Brown’s Island. A 2008 Mercedes-Benz C300 Sport Sedan is the top prize this year, as 17,000 rubber duckies wend their way down the canal. Be on hand at 3pm to catch the spectacle! More details.

Henrico Concert Band Summer Concert Series (free) – Bring a blanket or lawn chair and listen to the Henrico Concert Band perform
Dorey Park by the lake, 6pm
