When is Virginia's sales tax holiday?
So this year’s Virginia school supply tax holiday (August 7-9) comes with a bit of a twist:

“Legislation enacted by the 2015 General Assembly combines Virginia’s three existing sales tax holidays into one three-day holiday beginning the first Friday in August at 12:01 a.m. and ending the following Sunday at 11:59 p.m. This year’s sales tax holiday is August 7-9.

That means that during the sales tax holiday period, consumers can purchase qualifying school supplies, clothing, footwear, hurricane and emergency preparedness items, and Energy Star and WaterSense products without paying sales tax. This includes qualifying items purchased online, by mail or over the phone.

In addition to the specific items exempted, retailers may also choose to offer other items “tax-free” by paying the sales tax themselves during the holiday.”

In the past, hurricane preparedness was held in May and Energy Sense in October.

Overview of Exempt Items:

School Supplies, Clothing, and Footwear:
Qualified school supplies – $20 or less per item
Qualified clothing and footwear – $100 or less per item

If you’re in the market for a new appliance, this weekend is the annual Energy Star and WaterSense Sales Tax Holiday in Virginia:

During this period, purchases of certain Energy Star and WaterSense qualified products purchased for non-commercial use and costing $2,500 or less will be exempt from sales tax. The exempt Energy Star items include dishwashers, clothes washers, refrigerators, air conditioners, ceiling fans, compact fluorescent light bulbs, and programmable thermostats that carry the Energy Star designation. The exempt WaterSense items include bathroom sink faucets, faucet accessories, and toilets. Retailers may also choose to absorb the tax on other items during the holiday period, but they are responsible for paying the tax on those items to the Department of Taxation.

As always, the 5% tax savings doesn’t beat a great sale price, but is great (and significant when it comes to appliances) if you can combine it with finding what you need on sale.
