This is so smart.

Launched last September, the Free Richmond Instrument Lending Library offers kids of Richmond Public Library cardholders the chance to borrow instruments to try out (for free). Stop by the Main Library this Saturday from 12-3 p.m. to see what’s available.

Richmond youth ages 8-18 can check out instruments from the Girls Rock! collection for free – guitars, basses, keyboards, drumkits, and amplifiers – plus pick up instructional materials, learn how to set up the instrument at home, and check out the library’s holdings of sheet music and music instruction materials. You can have each item for a two-week period, with the option to renew for an additional two weeks. Instrument returns must take place during FRILL hours of operation, every other Saturday from noon-3pm at Richmond Public Library’s Main Branch.

What you need to bring: A Richmond Public Library card, and a parent or guardian if you are under 18, to sign the FRILL release form. Consider how you will transport items home, as some of them are big and heavy!

Our supplies are limited and will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis.

short pump mall

Every Tuesday evening 6-8:30pm in May, Short Pump Town Center will host a live music performance on the lower level near Dick’s Sporting Goods.

The event is called Tuesdays on the Patio, with the idea being that patrons enjoy music with a meal in the outdoor seating of Firebird’s, Lehja, California Pizza Kitchen, or Baker’s Crust. Sounds nice! You could also just pick up a meal at the Food Court and stroll and listen. (Perfect time to use that Seize the Deal Baker’s Crust deal from February!)

    May 1 – Justin Pachiocco
May 8 – Laura Ann Singh
    May 15 – Crewe D’Bayou
    May 21 – Me & Jo
    May 29 – Adrian Duke

google play books

The Amazon bargains I mentioned in last week’s Weekend Deals? (certain books or albums available for just a quarter) Those are thanks to Amazon price-matching promotions from the new competitor Google Play.

For a week, Google has been offering $.25 deals each day on one ebook, app, album, and movie rental.

“Now your favorite music, books, movies, apps, and games are all in one place that’s accessible from the Web and any Android device. Discover, buy and share like never before.”

Today’s the final day if you want any of the following for $.25:

$.99 movie rentals on Google

I have picked up Kitchen Confidential by Anthony Bourdain, Own the Night by Lady Antebellum, Mylo Xyloto by Coldplay, The Giver by Lois Lowry, and Guns N’ Roses Greatest Hits for a grand total of $1.25.

While this promotion is ending, the competition between Google and Amazon will probably lead to some more price-matching good deals in the future.

amazon holiday musci

If you need a soundtrack to go along with your holiday decorating, baking, etc. (and get a little tired of the same 10 songs on Lite98), you can beef up your tune collection by downloading a free song each day til Christmas (Update: Amazon wasn’t letting me link directly to the free music page for some reason. Follow the link provided and look for “25 Days of Free Holiday Music” image on the right-hand side of the page.) Currently available are “Ave Maria” (Celtic Woman), “Peace On Earth” (Brian Wilson), and “Adeste Fidelis” by Bing Crosby.

Amazon also has 100 Holiday MP3 Albums for $5 Each. Artists include Mannheim Steamroller, Frank Sinatra, and Amy Grant.
