If you’re in the market for a new appliance, this weekend is the annual Energy Star and WaterSense Sales Tax Holiday in Virginia:

During this period, purchases of certain Energy Star and WaterSense qualified products purchased for non-commercial use and costing $2,500 or less will be exempt from sales tax. The exempt Energy Star items include dishwashers, clothes washers, refrigerators, air conditioners, ceiling fans, compact fluorescent light bulbs, and programmable thermostats that carry the Energy Star designation. The exempt WaterSense items include bathroom sink faucets, faucet accessories, and toilets. Retailers may also choose to absorb the tax on other items during the holiday period, but they are responsible for paying the tax on those items to the Department of Taxation.

As always, the 5% tax savings doesn’t beat a great sale price, but is great (and significant when it comes to appliances) if you can combine it with finding what you need on sale.

energy star tax holiday

This weekend is a good time to go appliance shopping, because Energy Star and Water Sense products up to $2500 are exempt from sales tax Friday through Monday.

What’s Exempt: During this period, purchases of certain Energy Star and WaterSense qualified products purchased for non-commercial use and costing $2,500 or less will be exempt from sales tax.

The sales tax savings definitely doesn’t beat a good sale, but look for retailers to be running promotions in conjunction with the holiday. For example:

To capitalize on the four-day event, Appliance Solutions is increasing its marketing and signage and will offer special purchase prices, package discounts and bigger discounts on clearance items.

And check this out: your purchase may also qualify for a rebate through Virginia Energy Efficient Appliance Rebate Program! Eligible items include clothes washers, dishwashers, and refrigerators. (Valid anytime, not just this weekend. Apply sooner rather than later because it cautions funds are limited)

Thinking about buying any of the following in the near future?

Ceiling Fans
CFL Light Bulbs
Clothes Washer
Dehumidifiers
WaterSense Labeled Toilet
Dishwashers
Refrigerators
Room Air Conditioner
Programmable Thermostats
High Efficiency Bathroom Sink Faucets

This weekend might be the time – From Friday through Monday, you can avoid paying sales tax on Energy Star qualified products that cost $2500 or less.
