Venus is getting ready to take its last trip across the sun in our lifetimes! Museum scientists introduce you to the transit of Venus as you discover this planet’s weather – some of the most interesting in the solar system. The actual transit of Venus – when Venus appears to move across the face of the sun – will be June 5 and may be seen in our area starting a 6:04 pm until the sun sets at 8:28 pm, weather permitting. The next transit of Venus will be in 2117! After the event, weather permitting, we will point telescopes up into the vastness of space.

Hanover Tavern Heritage Day ($5 suggested donation) – Saturday 10am-3pm; Hanover Tavern
Knibb’s Battery will be demonstrating the process of preparing, loading, and firing Civil War artillery throughout the day. At 11:15 meet Hanover lady and listen to her stories of civilian life during the Civil War and don’t miss out on the free guided tours of Hanover Tavern at 10:00 am, 12:00 pm, and 2:00 pm. Camp Wilton on the James – Saturday 10am-4pm; Wilton House, 215 S. Wilton Rd
For 10 days in May of 1781, Marquis de Lafayette and over 900 troops made camp in the tobacco fields surrounding Wilton before the Siege of Yorktown. This weekend-long, living history encampment will have several demonstrations of the military drill of the Continental soldier. Enter Lafayette’s Continental camp and find out how soldiers –and camp followers–slept, ate, and lived while on the march. Entrance to encampment is free. Try our new Geocaching game – VSP Pocahontas Blooming Adventure 10:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Join our Jr. Ranger Family Amazing Race 11:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. (Register in advance $12/family) Join us on a Guided Hike 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Discover our Nature Center 4:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Enjoy a relaxing canoe paddle along Swift Creek ($9 per person, or $6 each for families of 4 or more)

Blacksmithing: Too Many Irons in the Fire – Saturday 12:30-3:30pm; Meadow Farm Museum
For all ages. The blacksmith was a very important member of the 19th-century rural community. Watch and listen to the blacksmith as the iron gets red-hot and the smith pounds and bends it into useful objects. Information: 501-2130.

For all ages. It’s pandamania time! Make a cool panda mask (while supplies last), and join us for the panda slide and panda pokey. Paw around in the balloon patch looking for a prize sticker, and bring your camera for a family photo opportunity in the panda jungle. Information: 795-2334.

Greater Richmond Children’s Choir 15th Anniversary Spring Concert – Saturday 4pm; Grace & Holy Trinity Episcopal Church, 8 N. Laurel St.
