Armed Forces Day is this Saturday, May 19th, and Richmond will hold a Welcome Home Our Heroes parade at 10 a.m.
The parade will begin at Kensington and Boulevard and proceed down Boulevard to end at the Carillon in Byrd Park.
The parade will provide the Richmond community – and the commonwealth – an opportunity to support and thank our military veterans and their families for their honorable and dedicated service to our nation during the past decade.
Then from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., The Carillon grounds will host a Veterans Resource Village featuring service and outreach organizations, including state, federal and local agencies and employers, as well as food vendors, military displays, and live music.
For more information, visit americaforvets.org or the event’s Facebook group, Richmond Welcomes Home the Heroes. Or call the Richmond Council Navy League at (804) 355-7557.
The 4th annual Dominion Riverrock returns to Browns Island this Friday through Sunday, May 18-20. Highlights include an air dog competition, lots of outdoor sport competitions, and plenty of free music!
The three-day event unites the community through a unique mix of activities and friendly competitions, set against the backdrop of Richmond’s downtown riverfront.
This year’s celebration will include competitions in a variety of adrenaline-pumping athletic disciplines including a mud run, freestyle bike competitions, trail running, mountain biking, kayaking, stand up paddleboarding, bouldering, slacklining and the Ultimate Air Dogs for our four-legged friends. In addition, each day is filled with live music featuring The Travelin’ McCourys with Keller Williams on Friday night and JJ Grey & Mofro and Galactic on Saturday night.
There are fees to enter the competitions, but admission is totally free!

This Tuesday through Friday from 2-5pm, local Chick-fil-A’s will be giving customers a FREE chocolate chunk cookie. Limit one per customer, while supplies last.
(My understanding is that all Richmond locations will be participating, but it’s always smart to check. Here’s the list of Facebook pages for local Chick-fil-A’s)
Update:
Definitely participating – Chick-fil-A Willow Lawn, Chick-fil-A Short Pump Crossing, Chick-fil-A Parham Rd, Chick-fil-A Westchester Commons, Chick-fil-A Short Pump Town Center
Not Participating: Chick-fil-A Virginia Center Commons

Dominion Virginia Power’s Smart Cooling Rewards program:
Get $40 for letting Dominion cycle on and off your air-conditioner or heat pump system during periods of high demand. You’ll be helping your wallet and the environment.
Dominion installs an A/C Cycling or “smart” switch on your outdoor air-conditioning unit or heat pump system. Then during periods of high demand, Dominion will cycle your air conditioner or heat pump compressor on and off for short periods. This occurs during the summer season between June and September. Typically cycling will occur for about four hours per event, between 2 PM and 6 PM, and will not occur on weekends or holidays. You may select up to two days per summer season to opt out of a cycling event.
For more information or to enroll, call 1-888-366-8280 or visit the website.
Sounds like an easy forty bucks, right? Do you participate in it and do you notice any significant comfort impact?

The annual Bon Air Victorian Day and Parade is this Saturday, May 12. The parade will start from the parking lot of Bon Air Baptist Church (2531 Buford Rd) at 1pm and proceed down Buford Road. This year’s Grand Marshall is WRVA personality Jimmy Barrett.
The Victorian Day event will run from 11am to 4pm at Bon Air Christian Church (2071 Buford Rd), with children’s games, performers, musical entertainment, craft booths, a bake sale, food concessions and an historical display.
We attended the parade for the first time last year and had a fun time. It was a relaxed pace and not too crowded. I noticed a number of kids showed up with grocery bags – and found out those were for stuffing with all the candy that was thrown!
