Hurricane Preparedness Sales Tax Holiday

While hurricane season officially begins June 1, Tropical Storm Alberto already grazed the coast of South Carolina last weekend. If that’s got you thinking about your emergency preparedness, you can shop for needed supplies sales-tax-free this week, beginning tomorrow:

May Sales Tax Holiday: Hurricane and Emergency Preparedness Equipment
When: Friday, May 25, 2012 through Thursday, May 31, 2012

What’s Exempt: During this seven-day period, purchases of certain supplies and equipment needed for hurricane preparedness will be exempt from sales tax. Retailers may also choose to absorb the tax on other items during the holiday period, but they are responsible for paying the tax on those items to the Department of Taxation

What’s exempt? Flashlights, batteries, radios, bottled water, fire extinguishers, etc. (under $60), in addition to portable generators (under $1000).
