FRIDAY

Sneak Peek Visit from Richmond Symphony – Friday 10:30am; Main Library, 101 E Franklin St
Become acquainted with instruments in the symphony and have a really great time during a special program with Sara Valentine and Michael Boudewyns, guest performers for Richmond Symphony’s LolliPops Saturday Concert, The Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra. The program is free and the public is invited!

First Fridays Art Walk – Friday 5-9pm
Richmond’s First Fridays Art Walk showcases over 40 diverse creative venues in Downtown’s growing arts and cultural district. Visitors are invited to enjoy and support a variety of art galleries, cultural venues, accommodations, restaurants, and shops along Historic Broad Street, east of Belvidere Street and west of 9th Street as well as in Historic Jackson Ward and Monroe Ward.

DJ Carlito’s Bollywood Night Dance Party – Friday 6-8pm; Atrium, Virginia Museum of Fine Arts
The First Fridays series features an eclectic mix of multicultural performing arts showcased in different spaces within the museum. Take advantage of our extended hours on Friday evenings (we’re open until 9 pm) to also stroll through the galleries, explore the VMFA Shop, or enjoy dinner and drinks in Amuse Restaurant or Friday Art & Wine at Best Café. Carl Hamm, aka DJ Carlito, has been bringing the colorful hits of India’s most popular films to Richmond for several years. Bollywood Night Dance Party celebrates the rhythms and melodies of Indian cinema, commonly known as Bollywood, and features the latest (and classic) Bhangra hits, as well as Martahi, Tamil, and Telugu. Leave all your troubles behind, join us on the dance floor for a celebration of Indian music and film.

Cinema Classics: Superman: The Movie (1978) ($1) – Friday 7pm; Henrico Theatre

Adventure Series: “Waterwalk: A Passage of Ghosts” – Friday 7:30-8:30 p.m.; Henrico County Administration Board Room
In 1996 Steven Faulkner and his 16 year-old son Justin left the fast world of cars, jobs, schools, televisions, and computers and set out on a 1,000 mile voyage in their 16-foot canoe, Natty Bumpo. They followed the route first taken in 1673 by the early French explorers Joliet and Marquette to discover the Upper Mississippi River. Waterwalk is a journey into the heart of this continent 300 years ago, a modern exploration of the quiet waterways that weave their way through America, and a voyage through the heart of a father-son relationship. Steven Faulkner teaches Creative Writing at Longwood University. A movie based on his book “Waterwalk: A Passage of Ghosts” is being produced by Michigan Blue Lake Productions. Kite Festival – Saturday 10am-4pm; Dorey Park
For all ages. Will March blow in like a lion? Henrico’s kite enthusiasts certainly hope so! Enjoy kite flying and demonstrations, exhibits, and contests and games in the pastoral setting of Dorey Park. Live family entertainment will be provided by Henrico County Public Schools and local band Sky Run. Hosted by the Richmond Air Force Kite Club, in cooperation with the Division of Recreation and Parks. Concessions will be available for purchase. Information: Rachel Moore, 501-5134.

Vicarious Travelers Series: Mali & Senegal – Saturday 3-5pm; Richmond Public Library, 101 E Franklin St
Dr. Robin Poulton and Virginia Vassar will share their stories and slides from Mali and Senegal. Dr. Poulton will have copies of his book about Mali for sale, with a portion of the proceeds benefiting the hostel. Please join us if you can–and bring a friend who might be interested in the hostel! Refreshments served. Optional tour of the future Richmond hostel after the presentation.

Recommended for families with children ages 3-12. Participate in a free “make-it and take-it” art project inspired by a select work of art from the world-renowned collection of the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts. (Activities vary each month based on availability of materials.)

A Woman’s View in 1860 Richmond – Sunday 1-4pm; Walkerton Tavern
