Update to Tuesday’s post about the upcoming J.Crew Regional Warehouse Sale
If you don’t feel like reading this whole post, here are the key points:
Last night, I received the following information form Warehouse Weekends, the company running the sale:
The J. Crew Warehouse Sale returns to Virginia for two weeks starting January 6. You’ll find great buys for the whole family. Past sales have featured discounts of up to 60% off retail on a variety of clothing and accessories for men women and children. The sale runs until the 22nd. Enjoy!
WHEN:
January 6, 2012 8:00 AM – 6:00 PM
Running daily through January 22. Times not specified.
WHERE:
J. Crew Warehouse Sale
9750 W Broad St (Former Borders Books location)
Glen Allen, VA 23060
You can keep up with Warehouse Weekends on Twitter or Facebook
If there were a coupon, I would have expected it to come with the sale email. Plus, Colleen left the following comment, with some more information about the sale policies:
There are no coupons and no discounts. Beware, JCrew has decided that you can no longer try anything on, anywhere, cannot sort your items until you are at the register and can only have one bag of merchandise. You are limited to purchase $500 worth of items and if by chance you take more than that to the register you will have to remove some of them until you get to the $500 mark. Once you have done all of this, if for any reason an item doesn’t fit or you got it for a friend and it doesn’t work, you have to sign a statement at the checkout stating you will not sell the item to anyone else, put it in a consignment shop, on craigslist, list a wedding dress on “the knot” etc. Checkout all of these crazy policies before you go- it seems like JCrew doesn’t really want to get rid of all this “scratch and dent” merchandise they are loading up in Borders.
What sizes are generally available? If everything is a size 4, I might not bother…..
does anyone know what the hours are for the sale for the next two weeks?
I had a friend who attended a JCrew warehouse sale in December when these policies were first enforced. She indicated that it was a “miserable” experience as JCrew had numerous security personnel patrolling the sale and she was questioned about her purchases at checkout. The atmosphere was not friendly or fun. If you want to read about other’s experiences at that sale, check out the posts on the JCrew Aficionada Blog:
http://jcrewaficionada.blogspot.com/2011/12/mark-your-calendars-jcrew-warehouse.html
Bottom line: I’m not sure I am going to wait in line for a few hours like I did at the last two Richmond sales just so I can be treated with such distain. I love their clothes and adore a great bargains, but I want to be treated with respect too.

I thought I would check out the J. Crew sale tomorrow but nevermind after reading the crazy policy!
Can you tell me what “you cannot sort your items until you are at the register” means?
I’m assuming it means that you can’t go through your items/put them back until you’re ready to check out. Which sounds ridiculous. Are people really going to be watching me as I make sure I don’t buy $100 worth of damaged products?
sale
Is anyone there yet? Is it worth a trip over and how long is the line?
I just got back. It was awesome and the people working there were very nice. They do have those rules but it wasn’t a big deal. I got tons of great stuff. I would recommend waiting until tomorrow morning at this point. A guy working there said they were receiving a new shipment tonight so I would get there at opening tomorrow AM. It was a mad house when I left there about an hour ago.
Thanks for the report Nicole! Glad you scored some deals!
It was jammed, parking is definitely a problem and I saw personnel from other stores coming over to complain about people parking in their lots (like Bassett across the street). But there was no wait to get in the building, and it seemed to me to be running like last time — people were trying on some items and sorting on their own before getting in line and I didn’t see anyone stopping them.
For people who went to the sale today, were you forced to sign the paper stating you would not sell the items? Anyone try to refuse?
I went this morning and waited for the doors to open at 8AM. The first hour was the best – quiet, enough room to move around, everything was folded. I’d suggest going in the morning vs. peak hours (lunch hours/early and late afternoon). By 10:45-11, the “warehouse” was packed, lines were somehow winding in and out among each other, and with just the amount of people, it was hard to comfortably shop. Still doable though, and definitely worth it.
The majority of the sale is Women’s Tops. There were quite a few coats too (assuming J.Crew is getting rid to get ready for the spring/summer seasons). Surprisingly lots of men showed up today. Skirts were very limited. They continued to restock shoes as the day continued. Lots of dresses as well.
No one was signing anything that involved the resale of products, although they do give you a letter with your price list when you enter, stating the J.Crew policy (being that they can refuse business to anything who is found reselling their products). I don’t know exactly how’d they figure that out, and many women in line early this morning did talk about how they purchase J.Crew merchandise and make a profit online. Who knows.
Wear a cami and leggings and you can definitely try on anything and everything. The staff encouraged it. They just didn’t want customers to be sorting through their items, especially in the middle of the store for safety reasons. When the store surpassed capacity, I definitely understood why. My bag ripped, and the staff was more than willing to give me another one – the man even lifted my stuff into the second bag. This ended up proving to work well to “sort” – when I tried on items (along a wall to appease the staff), I could put the items that I wanted in the inner bag, and iffy/not sure/no’s on the outside bag.
I was really impressed with the staff this morning. Maybe they were really nice to us who waited for the doors to open, but it worked out.
There were also a surprising amount of babies. Like seriously, try to find a sitter or something. I even saw a mom yell at her toddler for losing his shoe while sitting in a stroller. Like if you’re not going to watch what your kid is doing for hours at a time, what do you really expect?
Also, you go to the “tally” table first, where a staff member tallies your stuff before you enter the line for the register. I don’t think many of the staff were trained to correctly identify the products. I ended up overpaying for one pair of ballet flats, but it evened out when they marked my jewelry ($10) as accessories ($3). Also, I got a men’s t-shirt ($10) for the price of a women’s ($8). So you could possibly save more. But watch that they don’t mark a blazer as a winter coat, or ballet flats as regular shoes.
Like I said, I’d much prefer waiting 45 minutes earlier in the morning to get some comfort and elbow room. The “boss” (the lady who appeared to be in charge) also said there are more shipments coming in, so I’d like to figure that out. I reaalllly shouldn’t go back, but maybe just one more time at the end of the month. 🙂
Now if they just sold bottled water and snacks, they’d make a killing!
Thanks for filling us in on the details Jessica! Definitely NOT an environment for small children, I learned my lesson year when I brought my son and had to leave after all of about 10 minutes.

I went to Jcrew sample sample at 9am this morning!…The store policy is not as bad as what people make it seem….it is only for safety that they do not want to go through your bag in middle of floor because of the congestion of so many people in the store. However it was definitely worth it! I got 8 pairs of shoes… a jean jumper, womens dress, blazer and shirt…. kids dress and kids blazer all for $300.00….mind you some were the collection pieces which for one item would have been 300.00 or more!….So to those who are contemplating on whether they should go because of the store policy….I actually liked the setup better than the last times Jcrew were here! They assisted you if your bag ripped and passed out water!
I went Saturday morning. I arrived about 7:30 am and there were already about 40 people in line. By the time the doors opened just after 8 am, the line was more like 200 people!
The floors were clean, but the items in the boxes were not folded. I guess they gave up on that. I was there for about 2 hours and they were bringing out new boxes the whole time. There were a lot of shoes, but they all seemed to be pretty beat up condition. There was only one table with accessories, mostly jewelry and headbands. Probably 98% of the jewelry had stones missing or other defects. Jewelry is $10 each. I got a multistrand faux pearl necklace with a broken clasp, but the original price was $145 so I figure I can fix it easily enough.
Most of the stuff is formal dresses, women’s tops and women’s pants. I saw a lot of defects on the tops and since the items weren’t sorted well (this is to be expected) I didn’t find anything I felt like buying this time.
I was extremely happy with the winter coat selection. They had all sizes, tall, regular and petite. All coats are $50. I got two Lady Day coats with Thinsulate (retail over $300) for $50 each.
They also had a small selection of men’s and crewcuts items.
I did see one worker telling people not to sit on the floor, because it was a safety issue, but no one stopped me from trying on clothes in a corner (wearing a tank top and leggings). There was a rule about not disrobing though 🙂
I did not have to sign anything. If you go, please be aware that you have to go through 2 different lines to check out. One to sort the items and have the employees mark your totals on a sheet. Then you go stand in another line to pay.

has anyone gone in the last couple of days? I’m wondering if its still as crowded, or if they had to wait in line.. my mom is going to watch my kids so I’m trying to plan for the best time i should go.. thanks for all the info everyone provided, what a huge help!
p.s. early morning is a no go, I’d have to seriously bribe the kids to get them to move fast enough!
I went last Saturday around 4pm and there was no line to get in, and I only waited around 15 minutes to check out.
They have a ton of womens pants, shorts, and tops, but the tops do have a lot of defects. Definately wear leggings and a tank top so you can try your stuff on. The employees there told me they’re getting in shipments once or twice a week throughout the whole sale. The swim suits are where it’s at $3/piece!!!
thanks lacey!
Is there a store phone number? So we can call to see if they got in anything new that day, before we drive all the way up to the store.
