Free & Cheap Events June 19-21

Busy weekend coming up! It’s a shame I’ll be out of town.

Take your pick from three free outdoor concerts on Father’s Day:

David Esleck at Dogwood Dell as part of the Festival of the Arts (7pm)
Richmond Philharmonic Orchestra will give a concert at the Gardens at Sunday Park in Brandermill (6pm, 4602 Millridge Parkway, Midlothian). Bring a picnic!
And The Company Store performs at the Old Fashioned Ice Cream Social taking place at Walkerton Tavern from 4-6pm. Also Bruster’s ice cream and old fashioned games (2892 Mountain Rd, Glen Allen)

The 2009 Richmond Vegetarian Festival takes place saturday from noon to 6pm in the Azalea Gardens at Bryan Park. Sample vegetarian food and vegetarian-friendly products, listen to live music & speakers, and more!

Get a dose of living history with several weekend events:

Experience 19th-century life at the Chesterfield Historical Society’s annual Plantation Day. Enjoy a fun-filled day of activities, including children’s games, crafts, demonstrations, exhibits, costumed interpreters and food. (Magnolia Grange, 10020 Iron Bridge Rd, 10am-4pm)

Camp Wilton on the James: In May of 1781, General arrived at Wilton with over 900 soldiers; and remained at Wilton for 10 days, leaving on May 20, 1781- shortly before the decisive Battle at Yorktown. This encampment event will portray members of the infantry, artillery, and rifle companies of the rear guard. During the day there will be drills, firing demonstrations, and camp life interpretations for children and adults of all ages and all will have a chance to drill with the troops in the afternoon! (Wilton House Museum, 215 S Wilton Rd, Saturday & Sunday 10am-4pm)

At Juneteenth, A Freedom Celebration, experience African dance and music performances by members of the Elegba Folklore Society, take a torch-lit walk of the Slave Trail, participate in children’s activities, and more (Saturday, 3-11pm, Manchester Dock)

And don’t forget, this weekend all National Parks are fee free!
