The two U’s have just introduced a gas discount program called fuelperks, through which Ukrops shoppers receive a 10-cent per gallon discount at certain Uppy’s gas stations for every $50 they spend with their Ukrops valued customer card.

I’m a Kroger shopper (my husband converted me from Ukrops), but I see several advantages to this plan over Kroger Plus Fuel Rewards, which is how I usually get my gas:

-You only have to spend $50 to get the 10 cent Ukrops discount versus $100 at Kroger

-Ukrops rewards can be “stacked” – ie: If you’ve accumulated $150 in Ukrops spending, you’ll save 30 cents a gallon (10×3) when you fill up at Uppy’s. Kroger only applies 1 discount per fillup, so max savings is 10 cents at a time. It takes 3 fillups to use $300 in rewards accumulation.

-Ukrops fuelperks expire 3 months after they are earned; Kroger Fuel Rewards discounts have to be used in the calendar month after they are earned.

-There are more Uppy’s locations. 14 around Richmond (mostly BP’s) are currently offering the fuelperks program, with more due by the end of the summer (mostly Exxons). Only a few area Krogers include gas stations.

The unknown quantity is whether Uppy’s gas prices are on par with Kroger’s. Check for yourself at richmondgasprices.com

Back in May Richmond Magazine did a cover story on “Grocery Wars” (it’s subscriber only now so I can’t link to it) and they did a side-by-side comparison of prices, and overall Ukrop’s was cheaper than Kroger AND Food Lion. I like to shop at Ukrop’s because they are local and so nice, and the Food Lion is just nasty dirty and Kroger doesn’t have the things I like and I was paying more than at Ukrop’s and now I keep my money here in Richmond. Ukrop’s does so much for our community, and I’m happy to give my business to them to say thank you.

I was about to resubscribe to Richmond Mag anyway so thanks a bunch for the article heads up, I definitely want to check it out and see their analysis. Glad Ukrops fared so well. FWIW, I would imagine they didn’t take doubled coupons into account, which I do take some advantage of at Kroger.

Oh, and I totally agree about Food Lion. Ew! Not to mention the ridiculous checkout waits I’ve always had. I keep scanning their sale ads thinking their prices must be cheaper for being so icky, but no.

Fuelperks has been great . Still my favorite store. I go to the others off and on but still not like Ukrops. Its a good place to pick up food when you dont have time to cook.
